Ask for alone time in a relationship by saying what you want, when you want it and what contact you are comfortable with. For example: “I want Wednesday evening to myself. I would like to see you Thursday.” Keep reassurance truthful, and avoid promising a return time you do not mean.

Make the request specific

The emotional boundaries guidance from Love is respect includes spending time apart and asking for space or time with friends or family. That is a starting point; your particular schedule still needs to be discussed.

Before speaking, distinguish an uninterrupted hour, a regular evening alone and time to consider the relationship. Those are different requests. If you mean the third, do not describe it as merely wanting to read a book tonight.

Two messages you can adapt

For an ordinary evening: “I want a quiet night on my own after work. I am putting my phone away until tomorrow morning. Would you like dinner on Thursday?”

For a recurring arrangement: “I would like Sunday mornings for my own plans. Can we choose another time for our weekly breakfast?”

These are original examples, not a formula that guarantees a positive response. Remove any invitation or explanation that is not true for you. You can make a request without turning it into an account of everything your partner has done.

Make it about your love life.

Clarify what alone means

Would a goodnight text be welcome, or do you want no messages that evening? Are you changing an existing plan or proposing a new routine? Name those details rather than expecting the other person to infer them.

If you already promised to do something together, acknowledge the change: “I know we planned a film. I am asking to move that plan, and I understand that changes your evening.” Your request and their response can both be stated plainly.

If you are asked whether something is wrong

Answer honestly. You might say, “I still want this relationship, and I also want time alone.” If you are uncertain about the relationship, say that instead of offering reassurance you do not feel. You do not need to predict next week’s feelings.

Optional personal reflection

For a symbolic perspective on this connection, you can choose a Signature Video Reading with a custom question such as “What might I reflect on about my need for space with this person?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; 24-hour Express adds $49. A reading is for entertainment and reflection. It cannot establish another person’s thoughts, secure agreement or replace a conversation.
