To ask for reassurance, name the concern and say what kind of response you are hoping for. For example: “I felt unsettled after our conversation. Could you tell me where we stand on the plan?” Ask for something the person can honestly answer, rather than a guarantee that nothing will ever change.
Find the question underneath the request
In a personal reflection on reassurance, Han Koehle recommends identifying the question you want answered and considering who can answer it credibly. A general compliment may not address a specific uncertainty.
Try completing: “The part I am unsure about is…” If the answer is a practical arrangement, ask about that arrangement. If you want affection, you can ask for affection without disguising the request as a question about tomorrow’s schedule.
Three requests with different answers
For affection: “I would enjoy hearing something you appreciate about us. Would you be comfortable sharing that?”
After a conversation: “I am unsure whether we finished discussing this. Is there something you still want me to understand?”
For a plan: “Are we still meeting on Saturday, or do we need to change it?”
The last question asks for confirmation, not a judgment about your worth. These examples leave room for the person to explain what they actually think or can do.
Ask for an honest answer, not a script
Instead of “Promise you will never feel differently,” you might ask, “How do you feel about the connection we have now?” That answer may be welcome, complicated or incomplete. It belongs to the person answering.
If you have a specific comfort in mind, make it optional: “Would you like to hold hands for a moment?” Do not treat a requested gesture as a test the other person must pass or assume it settles an unrelated disagreement.
Listen to what was actually said
An optional note after the conversation has two lines: “Their answer was…” and “What remains unclear is…” Keep the wording close to what you heard. Avoid turning “I want to keep dating” into “Our future is guaranteed.”
If you realize you wanted someone to listen rather than answer a question, our guide to asking for emotional support gives examples of that different request. This page offers everyday wording practice; it does not diagnose why reassurance feels important or treat persistent distress.
Explore your question in a personal reading
For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What uncertainty am I bringing to this connection, and what do I want to ask?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
Compare the formats in our guide to choosing a love reading. Readings are for entertainment and reflection. They do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
