Explore ways to begin reconnecting after an argument, including a brief repair, an invitation to talk and a plan for an issue that still needs attention.

To begin reconnecting after an argument, consider acknowledging your own part, checking whether the other person is ready to talk and suggesting one small next step. You can offer a repair without requiring immediate forgiveness or affection. Reconnecting does not mean pretending the disagreement is resolved when an important issue still needs attention.

Try a do-over for the part you want to repair

The Gottman Institute’s guide to beginning again describes a “do-over”: noticing an unkind delivery and trying to express the point more thoughtfully. You can use that idea for a specific moment rather than asking to erase the entire disagreement.

For example: “I spoke sharply when we discussed the plan. I am sorry for that. I would like to explain what I meant without raising my voice.” The apology addresses your delivery; it does not require the other person to withdraw their concern.

Ask whether now is a good time

A possible invitation is: “Are you ready to talk for a few minutes, or would another time be better?” If either of you needs a pause, discuss a realistic time to return rather than treating silence as a completed repair.

You can also ask what would feel comfortable: a conversation, a little space or an ordinary shared activity. Offer affection only if it is wanted. A hug is not an obligation or a substitute for hearing what still matters.

Make it about your love life.

Separate the repair from the unresolved question

Imagine you argued about a canceled plan. You may both want to speak more kindly while still needing to decide how changes will be communicated next time. Write those as two separate points.

The first might be, “We want to address the way we spoke.” The second might be, “We need to agree how much notice to give.” A pleasant evening afterward does not automatically answer the practical question.

Choose a modest next agreement

You might agree to revisit the plan tomorrow, ask before offering solutions or take turns explaining what you understood. Choose something you both actually accept.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What can I take responsibility for, and what would I like to discuss with this person next?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
