A reversed tarot card is oriented upside down in the layout, but its meaning depends on the reader’s method. Practical Magic describes several approaches and explains why its author does not use reversals. A reversal is not automatically a bad prediction, and turning every upright meaning into its opposite is only one possible interpretation.
Why different readers explain reversals differently
Practical Magic's reversals article considers extra emphasis, an opposite meaning, and a shadow interpretation, while questioning a rigid rule that works for every card. The author instead uses context and an intuitive approach without reading physical reversals.
That is a reader's stated method, not a universal standard. Before comparing two explanations, check whether they are using the same approach. If you bought a reading, the relevant question is how that reader interpreted the card in that particular position.
Return to the question and the position
Write down three things: the question asked, the card drawn, and the position it occupied. A card in “what I can consider” has a different job from one placed in “what I am assuming.” Avoid treating a keyword in a guidebook as a complete sentence about your life.
For example, if you are reflecting on a difficult conversation, ask what the interpretation invites you to notice about your own response. Do not jump from an upside-down card to “My partner is lying.” That conclusion needs evidence the layout cannot provide.
Do you have to include reversals?
You can follow your deck's guidebook or a method you understand consistently. If you are learning, decide your approach before interpreting the cards rather than changing it because you dislike an answer. You may prefer to read every card upright and consider tension or uncertainty through the spread positions.
An inverted figure in a card's illustration is also not the same thing as the physical card being reversed. Read our Hanged Man page. Judge the orientation of the card itself rather than assuming a person's pose determines a reversal.
Use the interpretation without treating it as a verdict
If the reading raises a useful question, write that question in ordinary language. “Where could I communicate more clearly?” gives you something to reflect on. “This proves a breakup is coming” turns symbolism into certainty.
Read our what love tarot can and cannot tell you page. You are allowed to find an interpretation unhelpful. Ask about the reader's method if appropriate, or leave the interpretation aside; there is no need to make a prediction fit your circumstances.
Explore your question in a personal reading
For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What could I reflect on about the uncertainty or tension in my connection with this person?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
