Tarot vs Oracle Cards: The Practical Differences

Compare tarot and oracle cards by deck structure, imagery and interpretation, and know what to ask before choosing a reading.

The main practical difference between tarot and oracle cards is structure. Practical Magic describes tarot’s usual 78-card system, while modern oracle decks follow a creator’s own theme and organization. Choose by the experience offered rather than assuming that one category must be better. Ask what method and kind of interpretation a reader offers.

Tarot has a recognizable shared structure

Practical Magic's tarot and oracle comparison describes a standard tarot deck as 22 Major Arcana cards and 56 Minor Arcana cards. The Minor Arcana divides into four suits with numbered and court cards. Designs and some names may vary, while the system remains recognizable.

Read our Major Arcana vs Minor Arcana page. When you see a familiar card in a different deck, do not assume the artwork is irrelevant: check the interpretation the reader or deck guide is actually using.

An oracle deck may use its own categories

The same Practical Magic comparison describes modern oracle decks as organized around their creator's chosen theme rather than a fixed tarot structure. The number of cards, titles and accompanying messages therefore depend on the deck.

For a deck you are considering, look at a few sample cards and the guidebook description. Does it offer short prompts, longer interpretations, or a particular system you would need to learn? Read what the creator actually says rather than assuming that all oracle decks work alike.

Make it about your love life.

Choose by the experience you want

If you want a personal reading, consider the question, the reader's stated approach and the delivery format. You can ask: “Will this be tarot, oracle cards, or a combination?” and “What will I receive at the end?”

Before choosing, consider looking at a sample reading and the service description. Ask yourself whether the explanation is understandable and whether the delivery format would suit you. Treat the illustrations as one part of the experience rather than the whole basis for your choice.

Keep the method separate from a promise

Neither type of deck can establish another person's thoughts or guarantee that a relationship will develop in a particular way. An encouraging message can be something to reflect on without becoming evidence that an event will happen.

Read our choosing a love reading page. Love by Koko's listed reading options have their own questions, formats and delivery times; this comparison does not add an oracle-reading product to that menu. Choose the offered service that fits what you want to ask and how you prefer to receive it.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What could a symbolic reading help me reflect on about my connection with this person?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.

Read our guide to choosing a love reading. Readings are for entertainment and reflection. They do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
