LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

How to Ask for Exclusivity

Ask for exclusivity with a direct question, define the arrangement you want and prepare for a yes, a no or an uncertain answer.

The Lovers, from the Love by Koko deck.

To ask for exclusivity, state the arrangement you want and ask whether the other person wants it too: “I want us to date only each other. Is that what you want?” Clarify what you both mean. Time together and affectionate messages are not a substitute for that answer.

Separate a preference from an agreement

Love is respect distinguishes boundaries from expectations and explains how unspoken assumptions can differ between partners. Use that distinction here: “I want exclusivity” describes your preference; “we agreed to date exclusively” describes a conversation that happened.

Before asking, write one plain sentence about what you want. You might mean no other dates, no other sexual partners, a relationship label, or a combination. Do not assume exclusive settles every detail.

Open the conversation without a test

An original example: “I have enjoyed getting to know you. I am interested in dating only each other. Do you want that arrangement too?”

If you have already stopped seeing other people, say so without presenting it as a debt: “That is the choice I have made. I know we have not agreed to it together yet.” The question is an invitation to answer honestly, not a way to obtain a particular answer.

Make it about your love life.

What to say after yes, no or maybe

After yes: “What does dating only each other mean for us? Is there anything we should make explicit?” Discuss actual behaviours, including whether either of you intends to keep arranging dates elsewhere.

After no: “Thank you for being clear. I want an exclusive relationship, so I need to decide whether continuing this arrangement works for me.”

After maybe: “I understand you are uncertain. I am not treating that as an agreement. Would you like to revisit this, and if so, when?” You can also decide you do not want to continue while waiting.

Record the answer you received

As an optional private exercise, write “What was agreed” and “What remains unanswered.” Avoid changing “I might want that later” into “we are exclusive now.” A tarot reading cannot turn an uncertain answer into a commitment.

Optional personal reflection

For a symbolic perspective on this connection, you can choose a Signature Video Reading with a custom question such as “What should I reflect on about the arrangement I want with this person?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; 24-hour Express adds $49. A reading is for entertainment and reflection. It cannot establish another person’s thoughts, secure agreement or replace a conversation.
