At-home date ideas can be simple: a tasting plate, a shared playlist, a drawing challenge or planning a future outing. Choose something you both want to do and agree on the setup, time and cleanup. A date at home does not need to be an elaborate surprise to be a deliberate plan together.
Choose the plan together
The Gottman Institute’s guide to learning about a partner suggests asking what they currently enjoy for fun rather than assuming interests never change. A short invitation can help: “Would you enjoy making something together, playing a game or keeping tonight quiet?”
The ideas below are sample plans to adapt. They are not a formula for closeness or a list of activities every couple should enjoy.
Four ideas with a small setup
Tasting plate: each choose two foods you already enjoy, arrange small portions and compare what you notice. Check dietary needs and preferences before choosing the food.
Playlist exchange: each select three songs and explain a memory or reason for one of them. Listening is enough; neither person needs to perform.
Drawing challenge: choose an ordinary object, sketch it for a few minutes and compare interpretations without scoring artistic ability.
Game remix: use a game you already have and agree on a shorter round if you do not want the whole evening committed to it.
Four ideas focused on making or imagining
Recipe collaboration: choose a familiar dish and divide the tasks before starting. Include cleanup in the plan.
Tiny exhibition: each choose three objects or photographs and tell a story about one. Share only what you are comfortable sharing.
Future outing board: make a short list of places you would enjoy visiting and distinguish a possible idea from an actual booking.
Indoor picnic: choose a comfortable spot, bring a simple meal and put aside other tasks for the time you agreed. Adapt the setting to what is accessible and comfortable for you.
Make the invitation easy to answer
Try: “Would you like to choose a few songs with me after dinner, or would another evening suit you?” If the answer is no, ask whether a different plan is wanted without requiring one.
For another conversation starter, use our questions to ask your partner. You can stop an activity when it is no longer enjoyable; finishing the plan is not a measure of how much either person cares.
Explore your question in a personal reading
For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What kind of shared time am I hoping for with this person?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
Compare the formats in our guide to choosing a love reading. Readings are for entertainment and reflection. They do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
