Physical boundaries in a relationship describe what contact you are comfortable with. You can communicate a change even if something felt comfortable before. Be specific: “I do not want that touch today,” or “I want to pause.” A previous arrangement is not a reason to pretend your present comfort is unchanged.
Use your present comfort as the starting point
The physical boundaries guide from Love is respect explains that there is no relationship timetable for how far someone must go and that partners should communicate when comfort changes.
You can state what you want without first defending why it differs from last week. For example: “I was comfortable holding hands then. Today I do not want to.” If you do want an alternative, name it; if you do not, you need not invent one.
Make a specific request
Here are sample statements for different situations: “Please ask before hugging me from behind.” “I want to sit beside you without kissing tonight.” “I want to stop now.”
Do not combine a clear request with an opposite promise just to make it easier to say. “Maybe later” is useful only if you actually mean maybe. You can also say, “I am not making a plan for later; I am telling you what I want now.”
If you are the person hearing the boundary
A sample response is: “I understand. I will stop.” If the request is unclear, ask a narrow question without demanding persuasion: “Would you prefer no touch right now?”
Do not treat a boundary as a puzzle that tarot can explain away. A reading cannot grant permission that someone has not given. Any discussion of a later arrangement needs that person’s participation.
A short preparation exercise
Before a conversation, you could write what feels comfortable, what does not, and the one sentence you want to say. This is an optional wording exercise, not a requirement to prepare before saying stop.
For a separate request involving space, read our guide to asking for alone time in a relationship.
A personal question for reflection
If you want a symbolic perspective on this person-linked connection, a Signature Video Reading lets you ask a custom question such as “What might I reflect on about communicating my comfort with this person?” Koko personally records the reading. It starts at $99 for 15+ minutes, with standard delivery in 7–10 days. Optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
Read our guide to choosing a love reading before selecting a format. Readings are for entertainment and reflection, with no guaranteed outcomes; they do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
