Good first-date conversation questions invite a real answer without demanding an entire life story. Gottman’s dating-question guide recommends open questions and considering the stage of the relationship. Our original examples below begin with ordinary interests, then offer ways to discuss intentions if that feels appropriate to both people.
Begin with something easy to answer
Try one of our original prompts: “What have you enjoyed doing lately?” “What would make an ordinary weekend good for you?” or “Is there something you are looking forward to this month?” Follow the detail they choose to share.
Gottman’s guide to questions for a dating partner emphasizes learning about each other through conversation. Our suggestion is to offer your own answer as well. A first date need not become one person asking and the other performing.
Ask a follow-up that belongs to the answer
If they mention a hobby, you might ask, “What do you enjoy about that part?” If they describe a favorite place, ask what makes it appealing to them. These are our examples, not a fixed script to work through.
Leave room for the conversation to change direction. You do not need to force a deeper question after every answer. Notice whether you both get opportunities to speak and whether curiosity feels welcome rather than intrusive.
Discuss intentions without demanding a commitment
Read our dating-with-intention guide. If it fits the conversation, our suggested question is: “What are you hoping dating might add to your life at the moment?” You can share your own hopes without asking this new person to promise to fulfill them.
If an answer is unclear, ask for clarification rather than translating it into the outcome you want. A difference in intentions is information to consider. It does not mean either person has failed the date.
Reflect afterward without turning it into a score
Our optional debrief asks: “Was I comfortable?” “Did I enjoy the conversation?” “Is there something I want to learn on another date?” You can decide whether to meet again without declaring a long-term verdict.
Read our guide to declining a second date if you decide against it. If you choose a Love by Koko reading about someone you have met, keep the focus on your own perspective; a reading does not establish their private thoughts or guarantee where dating will lead.
Explore your question in a personal reading
For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What could I reflect on about my own impressions after meeting this person?” Koko personally records the reading, with a starting price of $99 and starting length of 15 minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
Read our guide to choosing a love reading. Readings are for entertainment and reflection. They do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
