To apologize to your partner, name what you did, acknowledge the harm you understand and describe the action you will take. “I am sorry I cancelled after you had already left home” is more specific than “Sorry about everything.” Give your partner room to respond without asking them to reassure you or forgive you immediately.
Name your own action
The apology guidance from love is respect recommends acknowledging the action, its impact and steps to address what happened. It cautions against adding language that puts the blame on the person who was hurt.
Keep the first sentence about your behavior. “I interrupted while you were explaining” names an action. “I am sorry you got annoyed” leaves unclear what you are taking responsibility for.
A worked example
Imagine you confirmed a date and then forgot to communicate a change. A sample apology is: “I am sorry I did not tell you the plan had changed before you left. You kept the time free and made the journey. I should have contacted you directly. Next time I change a plan, I will confirm you have received the message rather than assuming you saw it.”
Use only details that are true. This is sample wording, not a promise that the other person will accept the apology or that one sentence repairs a pattern.
Leave out the excuse that reverses the apology
“I am sorry, but you should have checked” moves responsibility away from the action you just named. If practical details need discussion, address them without making them a condition of your apology.
If your understanding of the impact is uncertain, ask: “Have I understood what was upsetting, or is there something I missed?” Listen to the answer before drafting your reply.
Make the next step something you can do
A practical change might be returning an item, correcting a statement or communicating a scheduling change. Do not promise an outcome outside your control, such as “You will never feel disappointed again.”
For the planning example above, our guide to rescheduling a date offers wording for a future change. Follow through on your actual commitment, and let the other person decide what the apology means to them.
Explore your question in a personal reading
For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What responsibility or next step am I reflecting on in this connection?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
Compare the formats in our guide to choosing a love reading. Readings are for entertainment and reflection. They do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
