LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

How to Reschedule a Date

Reschedule a date with a clear message, an honest explanation and a concrete replacement plan. See examples for work changes and uncertain availability.

To reschedule a date, say that the current plan needs to change, acknowledge the inconvenience and offer a real alternative if you want to meet. For example: “I cannot make Friday now. I am sorry to change our plan. Would Sunday afternoon work?” Do not offer another date if you actually want to decline.

State the change early in the message

The NHS includes open and honest conversation in its relationship communication guidance. Applied to a date change, a plain first sentence can state exactly which plan you need to move.

Try: “I need to change our dinner on Tuesday.” Follow with the explanation you are comfortable giving. A detailed excuse is not necessary to make the scheduling request understandable.

Examples for two different situations

If work has changed: “My shift now runs through Friday evening, so I cannot make dinner. Would Saturday at six work instead?”

If you want to meet but do not know your availability: “I need to move our date. I will know my schedule on Monday; may I message you then with another option?”

These are sample messages. Use a day or follow-up you can actually offer, rather than a placeholder that sounds considerate but does not represent a plan.

Make it about your love life.

Let the other person answer

An alternative time is a proposal, not a booking. If they cannot make it, you could offer a second option or decide together to leave the plan open.

If they mention the inconvenience, acknowledge the specific change: “I understand you kept that evening free.” Avoid requiring them to reassure you before the practical details can be settled.

Check whether you are rescheduling or declining

Ask yourself whether you want another date with this person. If the answer is no, repeated postponement does not communicate that decision. Read our guide to declining a second date for wording that matches a final answer.

A reading is optional reflection on your question; you do not need one to manage your calendar.

A personal question for reflection

If you want a symbolic perspective on this person-linked connection, a Signature Video Reading lets you ask a custom question such as “What am I considering about continuing to date this person?” Koko personally records the reading. It starts at $99 for 15+ minutes, with standard delivery in 7–10 days. Optional 24-hour Express adds $49.

Read our guide to choosing a love reading before selecting a format. Readings are for entertainment and reflection, with no guaranteed outcomes; they do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
