LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

Long-Distance Relationship Boundaries to Discuss

Discuss long-distance relationship boundaries around availability, privacy, visits and expectations. Use concrete examples instead of assuming distance changes consent.

Long-distance relationship boundaries are the limits and expectations you discuss about contact, privacy, visits and participation in the relationship. Make each arrangement specific enough that both people understand it. Being apart does not mean either person must be constantly available or agree to a form of digital contact they do not want.

Describe availability in both time zones

Write down the ordinary periods when you can talk, including which time zone you mean. Instead of “We should speak more,” an example is: “I can usually call on Tuesday evening my time, but I cannot answer while I am working.”

Ask what is realistic for the other person too. You can discuss what to do when a planned call changes without making every delayed reply into a demand for an explanation. Read our long-distance relationship communication guide for related questions.

Revisit privacy and digital comfort

Karina Koo’s discussion of long-distance boundaries on the UCLA Cares blog distinguishes comfort with in-person intimacy from comfort with digital sexual contact. The article cautions against assuming that an established relationship supplies consent for a different activity.

An original question to discuss is: “Which kinds of digital contact do we both want, and what would either of us rather decline?” Our guide to sharing passwords in a relationship addresses a separate privacy decision. Read it if you are considering account access.

Make visits an invitation rather than an obligation

Before booking an ordinary visit, discuss dates, where you would stay and how much time each of you can offer. “I am free that weekend” does not necessarily mean “I can host for a week.”

An example is: “I would love to visit from Friday to Sunday. Would those dates work, and would you prefer that I arrange somewhere else to stay?” Accept the actual answer before treating the plan as settled.

Check which expectations need an explicit agreement

If exclusivity, plans to live nearer or the direction of the relationship matter to you, name them. Do not assume the distance itself tells you what the other person has promised.

You can revisit an arrangement when circumstances change. For example, a new work schedule may mean choosing a different call time. The aim is an arrangement both people freely understand and accept, not a list of rules that prevents uncertainty or guarantees commitment.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “Which expectation about distance do I need to discuss clearly with this person?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
