Relationship deal breakers are limits you would not choose to continue a relationship without. A preference allows room for a different arrangement; a non-negotiable describes something you are not willing to accept. The useful question is what that means in your actual decisions, not how many rules you can put on a list.
Distinguish a preference from a non-negotiable
Consider two sample statements. “I would enjoy more evenings out, but I am open to other plans” describes a preference. “I do not want to continue dating someone who wants only a casual arrangement” describes a condition for your participation.
These examples are not a universal list. A condition should represent what you mean, not something added to pressure another person into agreeing.
Make your meaning specific
Try an optional three-column note: the issue, why it matters to you and what decision belongs to you. For example: “Different aims for dating; I want commitment; I can decide whether to keep dating under the arrangement offered.”
Avoid writing the last column as “make them want commitment.” Another person’s choice is not an action you can complete. For an exercise about naming priorities, read our guide to relationship values in practice.
Ask what their answer means
A sample opener is: “I want to understand whether our plans fit. When you say you do not want a relationship, should I understand that as your current decision?”
You can ask for clarification without turning a clear refusal into a negotiation. The guidance on respecting a partner’s boundaries from love is respect emphasizes respecting limits even when they differ from what you want.
Do not use a list as a threat or prediction
A personal list cannot certify compatibility or predict whether someone will change. Use it to examine your own decision. If you keep changing a supposed non-negotiable to maintain the connection, ask whether the label still describes your preference accurately.
If the issue involves intimidation or harm, it is more than an ordinary preference mismatch. Seek appropriate support rather than relying on a discussion script or symbolic reading to make the situation safe.
Explore your question in a personal reading
For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What am I weighing about my limits and this person-linked connection?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
Compare the formats in our guide to choosing a love reading. Readings are for entertainment and reflection. They do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
