When responding to criticism from a partner, look for the specific issue without accepting a sweeping verdict about your character. Gottman’s criticism-defensiveness guide distinguishes complaints about behavior from character attacks. Our suggested response is to acknowledge what is fair, ask for a concrete request and set a boundary around insulting language.
Find the specific concern inside the statement
Gottman’s explanation of the criticism-defensiveness cycle describes criticism as attacking character rather than a particular action. Our original example contrasts “You do not care about anyone” with “You missed the time we agreed.” The second names something that can be discussed.
You might answer: “I want to discuss the missed plan. Can we stay with what happened rather than labeling me?” Asking for specifics does not mean agreeing with every accusation.
Take responsibility for the part that is yours
If you did miss an agreement, our suggested response is to say so plainly: “I was late, and I did not let you know. I am sorry.” Read our guide to apologizing to your partner. Avoid adding an immediate counter-accusation to the acknowledgment.
You can accept responsibility for that action without accepting “always,” “never” or an unrelated judgment. Separate the repair you are willing to make from statements you do not agree are accurate.
Ask what change is being requested
Gottman’s criticism-defensiveness guidance recommends expressing a feeling about a specific event and a concrete need. Our example is: “If the plan changes, please tell me before I leave home.” That offers a next step to discuss.
Try asking, “What would you like us to do differently next time?” Then decide what you can realistically agree to. Do not promise a change you cannot sustain merely to bring the conversation to a quick end.
Pause if the conversation cannot stay respectful
Read our guide to taking a break from a difficult conversation. Our suggested wording is: “I want to address this, but I will not continue while we are insulting each other. Let us agree when to return to the specific issue.” Adapt this to your circumstances.
