Before you text your ex, identify the purpose of the message, check any existing contact boundary and consider whether you can accept no reply. A message about returning belongings is different from asking to restart a relationship. Missing someone does not tell you whether they want contact, and a reading cannot provide that permission.
Write the purpose in one sentence
Try completing this sentence privately: “I want to send this because…” Be specific. Returning a key, apologizing for a particular action and finding out whether reconciliation is possible are different purposes.
If the draft begins with a practical question but you are really hoping for reassurance, notice the mismatch before sending it. You can decide to ask a clear question later, or leave the message unsent. You do not need to disguise a request to reconnect as a question about an object.
Check the contact boundary first
Love is respect says that respecting boundaries remains important during a breakup, including when the other person wants less contact. Their guide to respecting boundaries explains that your own needs do not entitle you to impose them on someone else.
If your ex has asked you not to contact them, respect that request. If you already have an agreed channel for practical arrangements, keep those messages within that purpose.
Make a necessary practical message easy to answer
For example: “Your book is still here. Would you prefer that I leave it with Sam, as we previously discussed?” This example works only if that arrangement and intermediary are already welcome.
A practical message does not need a relationship recap, an emotional test or a second hidden question. For more on wording, see before I send this message. If nothing requires immediate action, you can revisit the draft when you feel less rushed.
Decide what you will do without the reply you want
Ask yourself whether you would keep sending messages if the answer were brief, negative or absent. Decide in advance how you will respect the other person’s response. A lack of reply does not establish their private feelings.
If the situation is reversed, read how to respond when an ex reaches out. Neither sending nor withholding a text guarantees reconciliation; choose based on the actual boundary and purpose, not a strategy for provoking a reaction.
Explore your question in a personal reading
For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What am I hoping contact with this person will change, and what is within my control?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
Read our guide to choosing a love reading. Readings are for entertainment and reflection. They do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
