LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

Overthinking Texts: A Before-You-Send Check

Overthinking texts? Try a short check of what the message actually says, what you are assuming and what you want your reply to communicate.

If you are overthinking texts, try separating the message you received from the meaning you are adding to it. Before replying, identify what you actually want to communicate and whether a direct question would be clearer than a guess. This is an optional writing exercise for an ordinary conversation, not a way to guarantee a reply or treat anxiety.

Read the words before deciding what they mean

In her guide to overthinking dating texts, therapist Claudia Giolitti-Wright recommends distinguishing facts from the story built around them. The exercise below applies that idea to preparing a reply.

Suppose a person writes, “I will let you know tomorrow.” The message gives a time for an update. It does not, by itself, explain whether they are enthusiastic, hesitant or distracted. Write the actual words separately from any interpretation you are considering.

Decide what your reply is for

Choose a purpose before polishing the wording. Are you confirming a plan, asking for information, expressing a preference or simply acknowledging the message?

For the example above, an acknowledgment could be “Okay, thanks.” If you need an answer sooner to make your own plans, you might say, “I need to arrange my afternoon today, so I will make another plan this time.” Neither message is designed to produce a particular emotional reaction; each communicates a different practical position.

Make it about your love life.

Use one clear draft rather than a hidden test

An optional check is to read your draft once for three things: Is it accurate? Is the request understandable? Does it say what I am willing to say directly?

If you notice that the message is mainly a test—such as hoping the person will decode a hint—consider writing the question itself. You can also decide not to send anything yet. This is a choice about your message, not a rule about how quickly everyone should reply.

Know what this exercise cannot answer

A careful reply cannot establish the other person’s feelings, ensure continued contact or tell you the cause of a delayed response. Those unknowns remain unknown until you have relevant information.

Read our facts-and-assumptions note for related reflection. If repeatedly analyzing messages is distressing or interfering with daily life, qualified support may be more appropriate than another writing exercise or reading. Tarot is not a treatment for anxiety.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What do I want to communicate honestly to this person without guessing their response?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
