LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

How to Support Your Partner

Support your partner with a clear offer of listening or practical help. See sample questions and ways to describe the time and help you can give.

To support your partner, ask what help they want and be clear about what you can offer. You might ask, “Would you like me to listen, help with a task, or leave you some space?” Offering something specific does not require agreeing to every request or promising unlimited availability.

Ask before choosing the help

The NHS relationship guidance suggests considering what you feel able to help with, whether that is listening or practical help. It also describes active listening as repeating back what was said or asking for clarification.

A sample question is: “Would it help to talk through what happened, or would you prefer help with dinner?” If neither option fits, ask what they have in mind before committing.

Make the offer concrete

Compare “I will do anything” with “I can collect the groceries this afternoon.” The second states an actual task. If time is limited, you might say: “I can listen for twenty minutes now, and then I need to return to work.”

Choose details that are true for your situation. A specific offer is not a promise that it will solve the problem, and declining a particular task need not be disguised as offering it later.

Make it about your love life.

Check that you understood

If your partner says they are frustrated about a cancelled plan, you could ask: “Have I understood that the short notice was the difficult part?” Give them room to correct the summary.

Avoid turning the question into your own explanation of their feelings. You can listen without deciding what they must do next or claiming that your interpretation is the complete account.

State a limit without a replacement promise

A sample response is: “I cannot take that on this week. I can help with this smaller task on Thursday if you would like.” If no alternative is available, say that plainly.

A personal question for reflection

If you want a symbolic perspective on this person-linked connection, a Signature Video Reading lets you ask a custom question such as “What am I considering about the support I can offer this person?” Koko personally records the reading. It starts at $99 for 15+ minutes, with standard delivery in 7–10 days. Optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
