LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

How to Talk About Money With Your Partner

Start a money conversation with one shared decision, concrete questions and space for both perspectives. Keep financial advice separate from relationship reflection.

To talk about money with your partner, choose one shared issue, describe your concern without a character judgment and ask how they see it. Gottman’s guidance on money conversations recommends understanding each position before pushing for a compromise. This guide offers conversation prompts, not investment, debt or legal advice.

Choose one decision for this conversation

“We need to discuss money” can be narrowed to “Can we agree what we are comfortable spending on our next shared evening?” Other starting points include how to raise an unexpected expense or when to discuss a purchase that affects both of you.

Our suggestion is to avoid opening every unresolved financial subject at once. Write down the decision you want to discuss and what information each person needs to bring. You can arrange another conversation for a different issue instead of treating this one meeting as a complete financial plan.

Explain what the concern means to you

Gottman's money conversation article encourages specific needs and listening before persuasion. Try completing: “The part I am worried about is…” and “What I would like us to decide today is…” Then invite your partner to answer the same prompts.

Read our relationship values page. Your concern might involve predictability, independence or enjoying something together. These are examples to explore, not reasons to assume you already understand your partner's motives. Their explanation may differ from yours.

Make it about your love life.

Turn an idea into a clear agreement

In a fictional example, one person wants spontaneous outings and the other dislikes unexpected shared costs. They could discuss which invitations need advance agreement and whether declining an outing is acceptable. The point is to make the expectation explicit, not to prescribe a budget.

Read our compromise in a relationship page. Repeat the arrangement in ordinary words: what you are agreeing to, who will do what and when you will revisit it. If you are not agreeing yet, say that rather than treating silence as consent.

Know when this needs different support

Our recommendation is to seek appropriately qualified advice for the financial or legal details of a decision. Tarot cannot establish whether a contract, investment, loan or joint account is appropriate for you. Keep any reading focused on personal reflection rather than a financial instruction.

If discussing money would put you at risk of intimidation or retaliation, prioritize safety and confidential support instead of using these conversation prompts. An ordinary disagreement exercise should not require you to surrender access to your money or accept coercion.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What could I reflect on about communicating my priorities with this person?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
