To set boundaries in a relationship, identify the limit you want to communicate and put it in specific words. You might say, “I am keeping Friday evening for myself,” or “Please ask before sharing that photo.” Explain your own choice clearly and listen to the other person’s response without treating their agreement as permission to have a limit.
Name the limit you mean
The boundary guidance from love is respect says partners should be able to express their wants and limits without fear of the other person’s response. A boundary conversation should not require you to minimize your comfort to prevent retaliation.
For an ordinary planning conversation, start with one concrete detail. “I need more space” could mean an evening alone, fewer messages or a different arrangement. State the part you mean.
Three examples with different purposes
Time: “I will not be available for calls during my class. We can discuss another time.”
Privacy: “I do not want that story about me shared with your friends.”
Physical comfort: “Please ask before touching my hair.”
These examples are invitations to find your own wording. They are not universal rules every couple must adopt. For a more detailed example about changing comfort, read our guide to physical boundaries in a relationship.
Separate your action from controlling theirs
A useful writing exercise is to ask, “What choice am I describing?” Saying you will not attend an event describes your participation. Saying a partner is never allowed to see their friends attempts to decide their behavior.
If you are requesting an agreement, label it as a request: “Would you be willing to…” Do not describe an unanswered proposal as something you have already agreed together.
Check what happens next
If the wording is unclear, you can clarify it without withdrawing it. “By private, I mean not posting the photo anywhere” is more specific than repeating that privacy matters.
If you fear a harmful reaction or your boundaries are repeatedly ignored, the love is respect boundary guidance also links to support from an advocate. A script or a reading is not a substitute for that support. You do not need to stage a confrontation to prove your wording is clear.
Explore your question in a personal reading
For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What limit am I trying to understand or express in this connection?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
Compare the formats in our guide to choosing a love reading. Readings are for entertainment and reflection. They do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
