Good conversation starters for couples invite an answer you have not already decided you know. Choose one question, take turns, and let the answer lead somewhere rather than working through a checklist. The questions below range from light everyday topics to shared plans; either person can pass or suggest a different topic.

Start with today

1. What small part of your day would you like to tell me about? 2. What made you laugh recently that I have not heard about? 3. What have you been enjoying during your time alone? 4. If we had an unexpected free hour, what would you feel like doing?

Try one question while you both have room to listen. A rushed answer during work is not a useful measure of someone's interest in you. You can choose another time without treating the conversation as a failed exercise.

Explore interests and memories

5. What did you enjoy as a child that you might like to try again? 6. What subject have you changed your mind about recently? 7. Which place would you like to show me, and what does it mean to you? 8. What is a memory from our time together that you remember differently from me?

The Gottman Institute's Love Maps article encourages curiosity about a partner's inner world and changing interests. Use the questions as invitations, not a quiz about how well you know each other.

Make it about your love life.

Talk about what you enjoy together

9. Which ordinary routine of ours do you most enjoy? 10. What is something we used to do that you would like to bring back? 11. What would make our next day off feel restful to you? 12. What new activity would you try together if being bad at it were allowed?

Read our quality time in a relationship page. If an answer suggests a plan, ask before assuming it is agreed: “Would you like to choose a day for that, or are we just imagining possibilities?”

Make room for a more thoughtful answer

13. What would you like me to understand about your current priorities? 14. What kind of support would be useful this week? 15. What is something you hope to have more time for? 16. What question would you like me to ask you more often?

A follow-up such as “What do you enjoy about that?” can be enough. Avoid turning an answer into an immediate correction or a story about yourself. Read our listening without filling in the blanks page. You do not have to solve anything, disclose private history, or finish all sixteen questions to have a worthwhile conversation.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What could I reflect on to bring more curiosity into my connection with this person?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
