LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

Journaling After a Breakup: Prompts for Today

Try original breakup journal prompts for what happened, what you miss, what remains uncertain and one manageable next step. No recovery deadline required.

Journaling after a breakup can be as small as a few private sentences about today. You do not have to decide what the entire relationship meant or write a message to your ex. Try one of the original prompts below, stop when you want to, and choose a practical next step that does not depend on receiving a reply.

Begin with a small writing window

Nicole Braswell's breakup journaling article recommends a notebook and pen and says an entry need not be a novel or a daily task. You can try that approach, or choose another private place to write.

For this exercise, choose one manageable moment rather than the most painful event. You might begin: “Today was difficult when I passed our usual café.” If writing feels overwhelming or unhelpful, it is fine to stop and seek support instead. These prompts are optional reflection, not treatment.

Five prompts about what happened

These are original prompts; answer only the ones you want to use.

1. What happened today that brought the breakup to mind? 2. What do I know about that moment, and what am I guessing? 3. What did I miss: the person, a particular routine, an expectation, or something else? 4. What do I wish I could say without needing to send it? 5. What question may remain unanswered, even if I think about it again?

An unfinished answer is still an answer for today. Read our closure without an apology guide.

Make it about your love life.

Turn one entry toward the present

Here is a fictional example: “I miss having someone to tell about my day. I do not know whether my ex misses that too. Tonight I can ask a friend if they have time for a call.”

The next step is small and within the writer's control. Yours could be arranging a practical collection of belongings, making dinner, or choosing not to decide anything tonight. You are not required to turn every sad feeling into a lesson or a plan.

Keep a journal separate from a message

Writing something down does not obligate you to deliver it. Before contacting an ex, consider what you are asking for and any boundaries already expressed. Read our before I send this message worksheet.

If you revisit an entry, add the date and a new note rather than correcting your earlier feelings as though they were wrong. “I see this differently today” can sit beside what you wrote last week. There is no timetable in this exercise and no requirement to feel grateful for the breakup.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What could I reflect on about my connection with this person as I decide how to move forward?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
