LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

Tarot Spread Positions: What Each Place Means

Understand how a tarot spread’s position changes the question asked of a card. Practice with clearly labeled positions and keep the interpretation open.

Tarot spread positions are the roles assigned to places in a layout, such as a situation, an obstacle or advice. The Oracle’s spread guide explains that a card is interpreted in relation to its position as well as its symbolism. Labeling the positions before drawing gives you a clear record of the question each card is meant to explore.

A position supplies context

The Oracle’s explanation of spread positions describes each place as a particular question for the card occupying it. A card in an “obstacle” position has a different interpretive task from one in an “advice” position.

For our own learning exercise, write the position label beside the card name. Then complete the sentence: “In this position, I am considering…” This keeps the layout visible instead of leaving you with unrelated card keywords.

Try a small original practice layout

Our suggested three positions are: “My present concern,” “An assumption to examine,” and “A choice I can consider.” Write them on three slips before drawing. They are reflective prompts, not a promise that a card can reveal a hidden fact.

Our three-card love reading guide discusses using a small layout. For a communication-specific exercise, see our communication spread. Choose the structure that fits your question rather than adding positions because an answer feels incomplete.

Keep your original labels when reviewing

For this exercise, do not rename an inconvenient position after seeing the card. Instead, note that the interpretation was difficult or that the layout did not help. You can design a different exercise another time without pretending it was the original one.

Try comparing two hypothetical placements of a card you know. What question changes when it moves from “concern” to “choice”? Record both possibilities as practice interpretations, not evidence about the person in your relationship.

Distinguish layout size from the purchased service

The number of cards, question allowance and delivery format are separate things to check. Read the Love by Koko reading details before ordering; do not assume a technique described in an educational guide is a promised feature of every format.

You do not need to design a spread to ask a clear person-linked question. A short description of the concern you want to reflect on can be more useful than asking for a large collection of positions with overlapping meanings.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What could I reflect on about my role in communicating with this person?” Koko personally records the reading, with a starting price of $99 and starting length of 15 minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.

Read our guide to choosing a love reading. Readings are for entertainment and reflection. They do not establish another person’s thoughts or promise an outcome.
