To cancel a date politely, let the person know clearly that the plan is canceled, acknowledge the inconvenience and say whether you genuinely want to rearrange. Keep the reason truthful and as brief as you are comfortable making it. Do not suggest another date simply to soften the message if you have decided not to continue.

Decide whether you want a new date before writing

Bumble’s cancellation guide distinguishes between needing to reschedule and no longer wanting to date the person. It recommends timely, respectful communication rather than leaving someone expecting a meeting that will not happen.

Before drafting, answer one question for yourself: “Would I choose another date if the scheduling problem disappeared?” If yes, discuss a new plan. If no, write a cancellation that accurately closes the invitation.

If you want to rearrange, offer a real option

An example is: “I cannot make our walk on Wednesday after all. I am sorry for changing the plan. I would still like to meet—would Sunday afternoon work?”

Only offer Sunday if it is genuinely available. If you cannot suggest a time yet, you can say that honestly rather than promising an immediate rearrangement. The other person can decide whether they want to wait or make other plans.

Make it about your love life.

If you do not want to continue, make that clear

You could write: “I have thought about it, and I do not want to continue dating. I need to cancel our plan for Saturday. Thank you for the time we have spent getting acquainted.”

This is an original example to adapt, not a script that prevents disappointment. You do not need to invent an emergency, list every criticism or offer friendship you do not want. Aim for a message that says what you have decided without attacking the person.

Acknowledge short notice without reopening the decision

For a last-minute change, you might add: “I realize this is short notice, and I am sorry for the inconvenience.” Then keep the actual decision visible. A long explanation can still leave the recipient unclear whether to expect you.
