LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

When Your Partner Does Not Plan Dates

Talk about sharing date planning with a specific request, a workable division of tasks and a way to notice follow-through without guessing motives.

If your partner does not plan dates, begin by naming the work you would like to share. “I would like you to choose and arrange our next date” is clearer than hoping they notice how much you organize. Discuss what planning includes and when it needs to happen, then notice whether the agreement leads to actual follow-through.

Name the missing effort

Is the difficult part suggesting ideas, checking schedules, making reservations, arranging transport, or all of it? Be specific about what you have been doing and what you want to change.

The Gottman Institute's asserting yourself guidance recommends clear requests about a particular behavior rather than criticism of someone's personality. “I have arranged our last few outings and would like you to organize the next one” gives your partner something concrete to respond to.

Agree on a complete, realistic task

Try: “Could you choose something for next Saturday, check the cost, and let me know the plan by Thursday?” Add any genuine constraints, such as budget, travel time or accessibility, before handing over the task.

Sharing planning does not have to mean an elaborate surprise or expensive event. You might alternate choosing a simple evening at home. Read our at-home date ideas. The important point to discuss is the effort you each want to contribute, not a requirement to perform romance in one particular way.

Make it about your love life.

Avoid taking the whole task back immediately

Here is a hypothetical example: you agree that your partner will choose dinner. They suggest two affordable options you would both be comfortable with. You can choose between them without also rebuilding the entire evening yourself.

If they are genuinely unsure about a constraint, answer it. If every decision returns to you, name that: “I am happy to tell you my availability, but I would like you to make the booking.” The goal is a shared agreement about responsibility, not a hidden test they do not know they are taking.

Evaluate the response, not an imagined motive

One missed plan does not tell you why it happened. Ask, then consider the pattern. Did they take the request seriously? Was the plan realistic? Did they follow through or propose another arrangement?

Read our feeling unappreciated by your partner page. If your partner repeatedly declines to share effort that matters to you, you can decide whether the arrangement works for you. You do not need to prove they are uncaring before saying that doing all the planning is not what you want.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What could help me reflect on effort and initiative in my connection with this person?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
