LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

Moving In Together Checklist

Use a moving-in-together checklist for conversations about routines, space, household tasks and expectations before arranging the move.

A moving-in-together checklist should cover the decision to share a home as well as the practical move. Discuss why you want it, everyday routines, private space, household responsibilities and how you will revisit agreements. Keep unanswered questions visible before making commitments; a checklist is a conversation aid, not proof that you are ready.

Start with what sharing a home means to you

Dr. Sarah Schewitz’s moving-in checklist at Couples Learn includes discussing motives, household roles and personal space. Those topics can help frame a conversation before the logistics take over.

Ask separately: “Why do I want to live together?” and “What do I imagine changing?” You might look forward to ordinary evenings together while your partner thinks mainly about a shorter commute. Describe both answers without assuming they mean the same thing.

Discuss the ordinary week

Work and rest: What are your usual sleeping, working and quiet-time needs?

Visitors: How will you discuss guests and overnight visits?

Personal space: Where can each person spend time alone or keep belongings private?

Household tasks: What needs doing, and how will you decide who handles it?

Shared expenses: What costs need a separate conversation and any appropriate professional advice?

These are prompts to adapt, not a prescribed division of tasks or money. Put “not discussed yet” beside an open item rather than checking it off because you expect to agree.

Make it about your love life.

Make one sample agreement specific

Instead of “We will both help,” choose an ordinary task and discuss the actual arrangement. For example: “We will decide the week’s meals on Sunday and each name the shopping or cooking tasks we can take.”

Then ask how you will notice when the arrangement needs changing. You could set a check-in after the first few weeks. For related planning, read our relationship check-in agenda. Avoid promising that a single checklist will prevent disagreements.

Separate the relationship plan from formal commitments

Keep a second list for practical matters such as moving dates, belongings, utilities and documents you need to review. Get qualified advice for lease terms, ownership, liabilities or other legal and financial questions rather than relying on this article.

You can pause a proposed move while a material question remains unanswered. Each person’s willingness matters. If you are considering a different arrangement, read about living apart together. Neither cohabitation nor separate homes is prescribed here as a measure of commitment.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What expectations do I want to discuss with this person before sharing a home?” Koko personally records the reading, starting at $99 for 15+ minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
