LOVE, A LITTLE CLEARER.

Jealousy in Relationships: How to Talk About It

Separate a jealous feeling from an assumption or accusation. Prepare an honest conversation about observations, reassurance and mutually agreed boundaries.

When jealousy comes up in a relationship, separate the feeling from the explanation you are giving it. Gottman’s jealousy guide encourages understanding triggers and discussing feelings. Our suggested starting point is to name what you observed, what you felt and what you want to ask, without presenting an assumption as proof about your partner.

Write the observation before the story

Gottman’s guide to jealousy in relationships discusses understanding what triggers the feeling. For our original exercise, make three short entries: “What I noticed,” “What I imagined it meant,” and “What I actually know.”

Our facts-and-assumptions note offers a place to continue. For example, seeing a friendly message and concluding that a relationship is ending are different entries. Leave uncertainty visible rather than filling it with the most frightening explanation.

Start a conversation you can stand behind

Our suggested wording is: “I felt jealous when that happened. I realize I am making an assumption, and I would like to understand the situation.” If there is a specific agreement at issue, name that agreement rather than making a general accusation.

Read our guide to asking for reassurance. Ask a question the other person can actually answer. “Can we discuss what we agreed?” is clearer than demanding that they make every uncomfortable feeling disappear.

Make it about your love life.

Keep reassurance distinct from access demands

Our recommendation is not to treat a feeling as automatic permission to inspect someone’s private accounts. Read our guide to keeping phone passwords private. Discuss the boundary itself and what each person is willing to agree to.

A practical request might concern clarity about plans or an existing commitment. It should remain a conversation where both people can answer. If you cannot agree on an important boundary, acknowledge that difference instead of pretending monitoring has resolved it.

Choose one next step without chasing certainty

Our optional next-step exercise is to choose one conversation, one boundary to state or one assumption to set aside until you have more information. You do not need to resolve every possible future concern at once.

A Love by Koko reading can offer symbolic reflection about your own experience of the connection. It does not establish another person’s private thoughts or guarantee an outcome. Keep direct evidence and the other person’s actual words separate from any interpretation.

Explore your question in a personal reading

For a symbolic perspective on your connection with this person, you can ask a custom question in a Signature Video Reading: “What could I reflect on about my own assumptions and need for reassurance in this connection?” Koko personally records the reading, with a starting price of $99 and starting length of 15 minutes. Standard delivery is 7–10 days; optional 24-hour Express adds $49.
